Monarch Casino Resort Spa employees honored by City of Black Hawk for saving man’s life

Quick-thinking teamwork led to a positive outcome for Monarch Casino guest stricken with a heart attack

Three employees and a patron of Monarch Casino Resort Spa received Citizen Lifesaving Awards from the City of Black Hawk today. The honorees stepped in to help save the life of a patron who went into cardiac arrest at the casino in late December.

Monarch Casino team members Molly Councilman, Craig Ambright, Dennis Quirk and casino patron Terry Swearingen were all recognized in today’s award ceremony.

The Monarch Casino team and guest swung into action when a man had a heart attack and stopped breathing, performing life-saving CPR until the City of Black Hawk Police Department arrived on scene to take over. The victim was taken to the hospital where he received treatment and has made a full recovery.

“Everyone knew their role and exactly how to react during this emergency,” said Monarch Casino Resort Spa General Manager Craig Pleva. “This is an example of why we take our training so seriously. These Team Members are an inspiration for us all,” Pleva added.

Monarch Casino Resort Spa is proud of its team environment, from the gaming floor staff to the security team, kitchen and hospitality staff, all the way to the executive level. Many team members have been with Monarch for years, working their way up the ladder to leadership positions throughout the company.
